This is an excellent holiday bread that is very moist and rich.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 5 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Put dates, nuts, and shortening in a large bowl and add boiling water; add the cold water and stir.
  • Add the baking soda, brown sugar, vanilla, and egg; stir until thoroughly mixed.
  • Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together and add to the mixture; stir well.
  • Pour batter into two greased loaf pans.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 1 hour.
