This recipe can be made with whatever flavor of cake you like. You can use yellow, chocolate, swirled, etc. You can even make a cake batter from scratch if that is what you prefer.
Follow package ingredients for the cake and mix all together in a large batter bowl until well combined.
Pour batter evenly into two 9 or 10 inch round cake pans that have been sprayed with a non stick cooking spray.
Place in a pre-heated 350° F oven for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely.
Run a butter knife around the edge of each cake and invert the cakes onto the cooling rack.
Decide if you are going to be making two seperate football cakes or one double layered football cake.
Take each cake and cut two inches out of the center of the cakes so that you end up with two half moons from each cake. When you put the two moons together you will get an oblong football shape.
Using a spatula, frost down the center cut of one of the half moons and then press the other half moon onto the first so that you have created a "football". Now you can either frost the top and sides of this cake to create one of the two footballs or you can add the top layer by adding a layer of frosting onto the bottom cake and placing the second cake on top to create one double layered football.
Place the white frosting into a resealable plasic bag and work the frosting down into one corner. Snip the corner from the bag so that it can be used to pipe the frosting.
Use the white frosting to create the threads of the football however you would like.
Place coconut into a medium sized bowl. Add approximately 5 drops of green food coloring to it and stir until all of the coconut is colored. Sprinkle the colored coconut around the edge of the cake to resemble grass.
