Homemade Runza Recipe

Runzas are a midwest favorite. Can be made ahead and frozen, just warm them through in the oven before serving.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup margarine - melted and cooled
  • 6 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion - chopped
  • 3 cups cabbage - shredded
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • tabasco to taste
Directions
Dissolve together in the water the dry yeast, sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Then add the egg, margarine and flour. Knead until smooth and then refrigerate for four hours. Brown the ground beef and drain. Add the onion, cabbage and seasonings to the ground beef and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Cool. Roll the dough out onto a floured surface and then cut approximately 15 squares that are 6x6 from the dough. Fill with each one with meat mixture, seal and place seam side down on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes.
