Ingredients
  • CAKE:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar - packed
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda - dissolved in 2 tablespoons of hot water
  • 1 3/4 cups flour - sifted
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • PENUCHE FROSTING:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar - packed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar - sifted
Container:mixer, saucepan, 9x13 baking pan

CAKE:
  • Place the shortening, brown sugar, white sugar, applesauce and soda water in a mixer and mix until well blended.
  • Then add the flour, cinnamon and allspice.
  • Mix well to combine.
  • Pour into a 9x13 baking pan that has been sprayed with non stick cooking spray.
  • Bake in a preheated 350° F. oven for 20-23 minutes or until the cake starts to pull away from the pan and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
FROSTING:
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the brown sugar and milk and boil over low heat for two minutes. Stir continuously.
  • Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to luke warm.
  • Then mix in the powdered sugar until it is thick enough to spread.
  • When the cake is cool, spread frosting over the entire cake and allow it to cool completely and set.
