Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In small bowl, dissolve yeast in water.
In mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, 2 1/4 cups white flour, 1/2 cup rye flour, salt, caraway seeds, and shortening.
Stir in yeast mixture, 2 1/4 cups white flour, and 1/2 cup rye flour.
Cover bowl and let dough rise to double, 30 min.
Stir hard 1/2 minute.
Spread dough in greased loaf pan.
Bake 45 minutes.
Remove from pan and cool on rack. Brush top with shortening.
