A generic classification of foods that are high in a type of carbohydrate that is considered unhealthy. Foods containing bad carbohydrates are those that have been processed (or refined), and are generally those made with white flour and/or white sugar. These food types include white bread, crackers, pasta, ice cream, candy, and sugary soft drinks.

Bad carbohydrates are believed to cause a sharp rise in blood sugar levels, which can be of concern for people with blood sugar problems. In addition, consuming large amounts of foods with bad carbohydrates often leads to weight gain. This occurs because when you consume more carbohydrates than your body can possibly use, the remaining carbohydrate is converted to fat.
