A small, bright green crescent-shaped fruit obtained from the flower of the bulbless variety of the fennel plant. This fruit is most often referred to as seed to be used as a spice for adding refreshing taste to various foods. Fennel Seeds are available whole or ground and have a slight licorice-like flavor.
Some of the typical foods seasoned with Fennel Seeds include pork, sausage, wild game such as boar, rabbit or venison, fish, seafood, curries, and breads. A common Chinese seasoning that uses Fennel Seeds is known as five-spice powder. In France, the well known herbes de Provence seasoning also uses Fennel Seeds. |
