Kaiser Roll
A type of yeasted roll that is enriched with eggs and a small quantity of shortening that is characterized by its shape, which resembles a five petal flower blossom. The shape is often difficult for the home cook to create successfully as the five sections of the roll have a tendency to blend together as the roll bakes. Some professional bakers dust the surface with rye flour prior to baking, which helps to hold the shape as the roll bakes. The rolls are crusty and delicious and are often cut in half and used for sandwiches. Kaiser rolls are also known as Vienna rolls.
