| Directions |
- Put dates, nuts, and shortening in a large bowl and add boiling water; add the cold water and stir.
- Add the baking soda, brown sugar, vanilla, and egg; stir until thoroughly mixed.
- Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together and add to the mixture; stir well.
- Pour batter into two greased loaf pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 1 hour.
