| Directions | - Melt the butter and blend it with the cake mix and 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk.
- Pat half of the mixture into a buttered 9- x 13-inch pan. Bake at 350ºF for 8 minutes.
- In a saucepan on the stovetop, melt the caramels with the remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk over low heat. Stir constantly until melted.
- Spread the caramel mixture over the partially baked cake.
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the caramel.
- Crumble the remaining cake dough over the chocolate chips; then return it to the oven and bake for 18 additional minutes.
- Cool completely; then cut into bars. Makes 36-48 bars.
