| Directions | Cut the cabbage which has been washed into 1 inch squares. Steam the pieces of cabbage in a heavy pan for a few minutes. Toast 3 slices of bread. Cut into 1/2" cubes Melt 4 Tablespoons margarine, add the bread cubes and brown in a warm oven (250°F) a few minutes. Prepare white sauce by melting 2 Tablespoons of margarine. Add 2 Tablespoons flour blended together. Add 1 cup milk, stirring constantly. Cook until thick and smooth and begins to bubble. Stir in 1 teaspoon salt. Place about 1/3 of the cabbage in greased 1 1/2 quart casserole. Add 1/3 cup white sauce and 1/3 cup grated cheese. Continue with layers of cabbage, white sauce, and cheese. Ending with cheese on top. Top with toasted bread cubes. Bake at 350°F about 20 minutes until bubbly. |
