Common in Australian tropical waters, this species of fish is a member of the perch family. Aclaimed as both a sport fish and an enjoyable tasting food, the Barramundi is most often found living in the streams and rivers around Australia but is also in ocean waters from the Persian Gulf to Asia. It is common for a wild Barramundi to become very large in size ranging from 100 to 130 pounds (45 to 55 kg) in weight and 3 to 5 feet (90 to 150 cm) in length. Farm raised Barramundi that are produced for consumption will typically range in size from 6 to 8 pounds (3 to 4 kg) in weight and 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) in length as well as smaller sizes if desired by the consumer or the vendor purchasing this species.

The Barramundi provides a firm white meat that is very popular baked, broiled, fried, or steam cooked. It goes well with all types of vegetables and can be enclosed in a food wrap such as a banana leaf or other wraps to provide a moist and tender meat when cooked over medium heat. The Barramundi is also known as a Barra, Silver Barramundi, Giant Sea Perch, or Palmer Perch.
