A kitchen tool used to remove the layers of flesh from vegetables and firm fruits, such as apples, by peeling off thin narrow shavings. Standard designs for peelers include a rigid blade that is formed into one position so the hand is required to guide the peeling by following the shape of the item being peeled. Vegetable peelers are also available with a swivel blade that enables a more effective method of peeling, because the blade can follow the contour of the vegetable or fruit, allowing thinner shavings to be removed.
