A type of grape used for the production of wine. It is native to Italy, but is widely grown in California. The flavor has hints of raspberry with a slightly spicy quality. It is used to produce a range of red wines as well as a selection of more heavily bodied dessert wines. The Zinfandel grape variety is used to produce the popular white Zinfandel, which is actually a blush wine. White Zinfandel remains pale in color because the skins are quickly removed after the grapes are crushed, this stops the transfer of color from the skin's pigments.
