Made with wheat flour dough, this type of bun may be made spicy flavorings, raisins, and/or bits of candied fruit or it may be made as a bun without the added flavorings. Topped with a frosting made in the form of a cross, this frosted symbol may be added after it is baked or it may be formed into the dough before baking, after which it is at times filled with frosting when the bun cools. Although Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten during the Lenten season, they are often served as a breakfast bun throughout the year.
