A tropical fruit that is native to South America but is also grown in the warm areas of the U.S.and other tropical regions. Guava have a very sweet flavor that may taste similar to the taste of pineapple, banana or strawberries. An excellent source of vitamins A and C, this fruit is oval or pear-shaped and measures up to 4 inches in diameter. The guava has thin skin ranging in colors from white, yellow, red, or dark pink with a flesh that may be pale yellow to bright red. Green guavas should be ripened at room temperature and guavas that are already ripe can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. Guavas are suitable for jams and preserves and for juicing.
