Mulberry

The fruit from a mulberry shrub or tree. The fruit is very sweet but does not keep well so they are used mostly to make jellies and preserves. The mulberry trees are not used much any more in America due to several reasons: the berries do not keep well; they cannot be shipped; and silkworms feed on the leaves, making the shrubs or trees difficult to maintain. Dried mulberries are available in some Middle Eastern markets. They have a flavor similar to a fig.
