A small, round, black berry with a sweet, juicy flavor, which is grown mainly in France and northern Europe. The black currants, which are the most tart of the three varieties (black, red and white currants), are often combined with other currant varieties for cooking in order to reduce the tart-tasting flavor, or processed into wines and liqueurs. This variety has a firm and somewhat tough skin that covers a tart flesh. Despite their strong tart flavor, black currants are also used in making preserves, desserts, and baked goods.
