A grilled bread appetizer, native to Italy, that is sprinkled or rubbed with olive oil and garlic, and then topped with assorted ingredients. Bruschetta is similar to crostini, but instead of meat and seafood toppings traditionally served on crostini, bruschetta usually consists of a larger piece of bread with only a few ingredients such as any of several of the following: salt, garlic, basil, chopped tomatoes or tomato paste, anchovies, olives, mushrooms, and occasionally cheese. The term "bruschetta" has also been known to refer to a food topping spread onto the bread, but most often it is used to refer to the toasted bread with the topping.
