A type of small, flattened cake that usually has a crispier consistency than cake and is baked in batches on a large flat pan. Many types of basic cookie dough can be prepared and a variety of ingredients can be added to the basic dough such as chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts. Cookies are popular as snacks or desserts. Often, the various types of cookies are classified by their shape, an ingredient, or the method used to shape them. As examples, there are cookies referred to as bars to denote a shape, or molasses and sugar cookies named for their ingredients, or molded, pressed and rolled cookies, named for the method of preparing their shape.
