A round dumpling that is most often served in a chicken broth soup. The Matzo ball is made by combining Matzo meal (crushed dried flatbread), oil or butter, eggs, and seasonings together, forming the mixture into round balls approximately 1 inch or so in diameter. The balls are then cooked in boiling water or a broth before being served in a broth as a soup. Served throughout the year, Matzo balls or Matzah balls as they are also known are a food commonly served at Passover seder, the Jewish holiday. In addition to Matzah, the Matzo ball may be referred to as a single ball called a knaidel or as several dumplings when referred to as knaidlach or knaydelach.
